FEEDING PROBLEMS

Many small babies have difficulty with feeding initially. Indeed for a new Mum it can be an intimidating experience full of uncertainties. It is where one is dependant on nature to help us out or the advise and instruction of an expert to get things right.

Sometimes however things still just don't work out and this is where a Chiropractor may be helpful.

It is common for there to be problems with latching, sucking or an insufficiency in milk. Some of these problems are attributable to nerve irritation and this is where Chiropractic and Cranial treatment can help

Signs to look out for include :

Inability for the baby to turn in to the breast
Apparent side preference when feeding
Poor sucking
Tongue-tied baby
Regurgitation of milk (prominent gag reflex)

In order for the feeding process to work well it involves integration of the rooting reflex, an ability for the baby to move their head to the right position, pursing of the lips, movement of the tongue and swallowing. Thus a problem in any of the areas may lead to feeding difficulties.

It has been found that problems in the cranium or upper cervical spine (neck) of the baby can irritate the hypoglossal nerve to the tongue which can affect sucking and swallowing actions. Restriction of the neck may cause the baby a problem latching as the baby cannot move their head properly to the breast. Jaw restrictions may cause problems in opening the mouth sufficiently so the baby may 'slurp' as they feed. Irritation of the facial nerve may also affect the rooting reflex 'confusing' the baby as they try to find the nipple.

Gentle and specific chiropractic treatment to the spine and cranial bones in these situations can dramatically reduce feeding problems as the work removes irritation to the nerves allowing the feeding action to occur uninhibited.
